With the rising cost of traditional energy sources and growing concerns about the environment, more and more homeowners and businesses in NZ are turning to solar power. But where do you start? How do you choose the right solar panels for your needs? And how can you maximize the energy generated by your solar system?

In this guide, we will address these questions and more. We will provide you with valuable insights into the different types of solar panels available in NZ, their installation process, and the return on investment you can expect. Whether you’re a solar energy novice or looking to upgrade your existing system, this guide will empower you to make informed decisions and harness the power of the sun.

How do solar panels work

Solar panels are devices that convert sunlight into electricity. They are made up of photovoltaic cells, which are typically made of silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites the electrons in the silicon, creating an electric current. This current is then captured and converted into usable electricity.

Solar panels work best when they are exposed to direct sunlight. They can still generate electricity on cloudy days, but the efficiency may be reduced. The electricity generated by solar panels is in the form of direct current (DC), which is then converted into alternating current (AC) using an inverter. AC is the type of electricity that is used in our homes and businesses.

Solar panels are typically installed on rooftops or in open areas with maximum exposure to sunlight. They are mounted at an angle to capture the most sunlight throughout the day. The electricity produced by solar panels can be used to power appliances and devices directly, or it can be stored in batteries for later use.

Solar panels are a clean and renewable source of energy. By harnessing the power of the sun, we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lower our carbon footprint.

Benefits of solar panels in New Zealand

There are numerous benefits to installing solar panels in New Zealand. One of the main advantages is the potential for significant cost savings on your energy bills. By generating your own electricity, you can reduce or even eliminate your monthly electricity costs. This can be especially beneficial in the long run as electricity prices continue to rise.

Solar panels also provide a reliable source of energy. Unlike traditional energy sources that are subject to price fluctuations and supply shortages, the sun is a constant and abundant source of energy. As long as the sun is shining, your solar panels will be generating electricity.

In addition to cost savings, solar panels also offer environmental benefits. By using solar energy, you are reducing your reliance on fossil fuels, which contribute to air pollution and climate change. Solar energy is clean and renewable, making it a sustainable choice for powering your home or business.

Installing solar panels can also increase the value of your property. Studies have shown that homes with solar panels sell for a higher price compared to homes without them. This is because potential buyers recognize the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits associated with solar panels.

    Solar panel installation process

The installation process for solar panels in New Zealand typically involves several steps. First, a site assessment is conducted to determine the suitability of your property for solar panel installation. Factors such as roof orientation, shading, and structural integrity are evaluated during this assessment.

Once the site assessment is complete, the next step is to design the solar panel system. This includes determining the number of panels needed, their placement, and the size of the inverter required. The design is tailored to your specific energy needs and the available space on your property. After the design is finalized, the installation can begin. This involves mounting the solar panels on your roof or in an open area using specialized mounting brackets.

Wires are then connected to the panels and run to the inverter, which converts the DC electricity into AC electricity. Finally, the system is connected to your home’s electrical panel, allowing the solar-generated electricity to power your home. Any excess electricity that is not used immediately can be fed back into the grid and credited to your account through a process known as net metering.

It is important to hire a qualified and experienced solar panel installer to ensure a safe and efficient installation. They will handle all the necessary permits, inspections, and paperwork to ensure compliance with local regulations.

Choosing the right solar panel system for your needs

When it comes to choosing the right solar panel system for your needs, there are several factors to consider. The first is the size of the system, which is determined by your energy consumption. A larger system will generate more electricity, but it will also be more expensive to install. It’s important to strike a balance between your energy needs and your budget.

The type of solar panels is another important consideration. There are several different types of solar panels available, including monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, cost, and aesthetics. It’s worth researching and comparing the different options to find the best fit for your specific requirements.

The warranty and performance guarantee offered by the solar panel manufacturer are also important factors to consider. A longer warranty period and a higher performance guarantee indicate that the manufacturer has confidence in the quality and durability of their panels. This can provide you with peace of mind knowing that your investment is protected.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the reputation and track record of the solar panel installer. Look for reviews and testimonials from previous customers to gauge their level of expertise and customer satisfaction. A reputable installer will provide you with a high-quality installation and excellent customer service.

Lastly, take into account the available financing options and government incentives. Solar panel installations can be a significant upfront investment, but there are often financing options available to help make it more affordable. Additionally, the New Zealand government offers various incentives and rebates to encourage the adoption of solar energy. Be sure to explore these options to maximize your savings.

Factors to consider before installing solar panels

Before installing solar panels, there are several factors you should consider to ensure a successful and efficient system. The first is the orientation and tilt of your roof. Ideally, your roof should be facing south to maximize sun exposure throughout the day. However, east and west-facing roofs can still generate a significant amount of electricity.

Shading is another important consideration. Trees, buildings, and other obstructions can cast shadows on your solar panels, reducing their efficiency. It’s important to assess the shading on your property and make necessary adjustments, such as trimming trees or repositioning panels, to maximize sunlight exposure.

The condition and age of your roof should also be evaluated. Solar panels typically have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years, so it’s important to ensure that your roof is in good condition and will last for the lifespan of the panels. If your roof needs repairs or replacement, it’s best to address those issues before installing solar panels.

Additionally, it’s important to consider your energy consumption and usage patterns. Understanding your energy needs will help determine the size and capacity of the solar panel system you require. Analyze your past energy bills to get an idea of your average monthly consumption and identify any peak usage periods.

Lastly, it’s important to be aware of any local regulations or restrictions on solar panel installations. Some homeowners associations or local councils may have specific guidelines or requirements that need to be followed. It’s important to consult with your installer and research the local regulations to ensure compliance.

By considering these factors before installing solar panels, you can ensure that your system is optimized for maximum efficiency and long-term performance.

    Solar panel maintenance and care

Solar panels require minimal maintenance and care, but there are a few things you can do to ensure their optimal performance. Regular cleaning of the panels is important to remove dirt, dust, and debris that can accumulate over time. This can be done with a soft brush or cloth and clean water. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals that can damage the panels.

It’s also important to monitor the performance of your solar panel system regularly. Some inverters have built-in monitoring systems that allow you to track the electricity production in real-time. Monitoring your system can help identify any issues or malfunctions early on, allowing for prompt repairs and maintenance.

In addition to regular cleaning and monitoring, it’s important to have your solar panel system inspected by a professional at least once a year. They can check for any signs of wear and tear, loose connections, or other potential issues that may affect the performance of your system. Regular inspections can help prolong the lifespan of your panels and ensure their optimal performance.

Lastly, be mindful of any potential shading issues that may arise over time. As trees grow or new structures are built in the vicinity of your solar panels, shading can become a problem. Regularly trim trees or adjust the position of panels if necessary to maintain maximum sun exposure.

By following these maintenance and care tips, you can ensure that your solar panels continue to generate clean and renewable energy for many years to come.

    Common misconceptions about solar panels

Despite the numerous benefits and incentives, there are still some common misconceptions about solar panels. One of the main misconceptions is that solar panels are only effective in sunny regions. While it’s true that solar panels generate more electricity in areas with high sun exposure, they can still be effective in regions with lower sunlight levels. Solar panels can still generate electricity on cloudy or overcast days, although the output may be reduced.

Another misconception is that solar panels are expensive and not cost-effective. While the upfront costs of solar panel installations can be significant, the long-term cost savings and return on investment can outweigh the initial investment. With rising electricity prices and government incentives, solar panels can provide significant cost savings over their lifespan.

Some people also believe that solar panels require constant maintenance and are fragile. In reality, solar panels require minimal maintenance and are built to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are designed to be durable and can withstand hail, wind, and snow. As long as the panels are installed correctly and maintained properly, they can last for 25 to 30 years with minimal issues.

Lastly, there is a misconception that solar panels are not aesthetically pleasing and can detract from the appearance of a property. While it’s true that solar panels are visible on the roof, there are now options available that blend in seamlessly with the design of your property. Solar panels can be installed flush with the roof or in a way that minimizes their visual impact.

Solar panel installation can be a worthwhile investment for homeowners and businesses in New Zealand. With the rising cost of electricity and growing concerns about the environment, solar energy offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

By understanding how solar panels work, the benefits they offer, and the installation process, you can make informed decisions about whether solar panel installation is right for you. Consider factors such as your energy consumption, budget, and property suitability before making a decision.

Solar panels not only provide cost savings on your energy bills but also reduce your carbon footprint and increase the value of your property. By harnessing the power of the sun, you can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Very friendly people to deal with. Make it easy to install solar PV and solar hot water. Have great variety of options and can make it suit your needs.

Recommend Sunshine Solar For panels and for hot water. Their after sale service is great as well. We had solar hot water installed at our last build and proved to be a great investment. Our house now, we have 12 panels installed and also a great investment. So for anything solar, I would recommend Sunshine Solar.

Awesome service right from the get go. Then the follow up check in to ensure all is running well (which it is of course). The panels themselves are also great looking compared to most others, full black and sleek with extra warranty over comparables. Super impressed on all fronts and a great investment, thanks heaps Sunshine Solar!

They installed our system. Generally excellent service and the cost was competitive. We had an issue with our design… the planned inverter was a bit too small (we were right on the edge). When we raised the issue they sorted it out asap! The only cost was the difference between the inverter we had and the new one. I’d use them again.

I am very happy with the work done thanksand service they give

We had our 22 panel 3 phase solar panel system installed by sunshine sola a year ago, the pre installation benefits of solar were explained in detail.the installation was very professional by a knowledgeable team. Sunshine solar installed our panels almost a year ago. Fantastic service and product. Love the savings on our power bills

When I decided to have solar panels installed and for Sunshine Solar to do it, I was very impressed that Chris who was doing the assessment endorsed my decision not to have a battery installed. As I wanted to go for a year without one just to see how the costs would go. There was no high pressure sales tactics applied. Even without the battery there is flexibility in using high use appliances through out the day. Previously I used the high use appliances on night rate. If you are prepared to pay major costs up front in the long term costs are cheaper with solar panels. I would recommend having solar panels installed by Sunshine Solar.

Great service from initial enquiry through to installation which was professional and efficient. Great personalized follow-up and customer support.

We had Sunshine Solar install our 10 panel system almost a year ago and we are very happy with it. Obviously especially in summer where our bill went from $130 Dec 2021 down to $42 in Dec 2022!! It's more even over winter but still a saving and great to be part of covering our own needs including charging a car. We appreciated the clear information from James and easy installation process. Follow up after install was also great. Thanks Sunshine Solar team

Sunshine Solar first assessed whether hot water only or full solar power generation was most suitable for my home. I appreciated that they didn't just try to sell me the more expensive system, but advised me that the hot water only made more economic sense for my small unit. They were flexible with me regarding the installation timeline and helpfully produced the extra documents I needed for getting a Good Energy loan from my bank. The installation went smoothly. I immediately noticed a savings as the hot water heating component was gone from my power bill. A year later they touched base again to make sure I'm happy with how it's going. I recommend getting in touch with them if you have questions about what system would work best for your place.

I was new to solar and Chris explained everything very simply and clearly. It has now been 12 months since our installation and it has surpassed my expectations! A trustworthy and expert team who have followed up twice to make sure I understand how everything works.

We are very happy with the level of service we have received before and after installation. We were kept informed every step of the process by the friendly and knowledgeable team including office staff.Always available to answer queries and help, knew their solar product and how it worked thoroughly. Helped with lining up an electrician who also was very informative and related companies to connect us with power. Already we can see the benefits and savings even though we have only had solar since the beginning of this year. We are definitely happy to recommend Sunshine to anybody who is thinking about getting solar installed at their place.Gary Sword

Easy to get a quote, which was accurate, installation went well, and friendly after service. I would recommend their service.

We had a 7.2kw, 18 panel, 5kw battery system installed last January. This system has exceeded our expectations and is performing as forecast in the Sunshine Solar quote. An unexpected outcome is a significant decrease in our energy usage due to being able to monitor our power consumption via the associated app which has resulted in an overall shorter pay back interval. The installers were on time and great to deal with. Speedy responses to post installation requests have resulted in system tweaks to maximise performance. We would recommend Sunshine Solar to anyone considering a home solar PV system.

Sunshine Sola was our company of choice after having been to the Home Show. John Wilson and his staff have many years of experience and built up years of knowledge. The staff are very approachable and we highly recommend them.

I can not recommend these folks enough from initial looking into solar and getting quote, to installation they even come and check system doing it's job. So good

We've had our system in for about 7 months now. Very happy with the level of service both before and after installation. It was installed when it was booked to go in and does exactly what we were told it would do. Sunshine were easy to deal with and easy to get hold of if you need to. A very friendly and approachable team. Definitely happy to recommend Sunshine to anyone thinking about getting solar installed at their place.

Sunshine solar were great to deal with. Great service and a great product. The install team were awesome and after sales was amazing.

We have had great service and would highly recommend. After a few months we would recommend Solar to anyone.

We installed an 8kw, 20 panel unit in January this year. I am very happy so far. The electricity savings are around $300 per month and that will mean a 12-15% return on our investment. Sunshine Solar also installed timers for our hot water cylinders and combined with a new power plan from Contact, the savings are substantial. I am thinking of installing 5 more panels set at a steeper angle to better utilise winter sun. I will be happy to get Sunshine Solar to do this job.

Looked into getting solar for a variety of reasons and reasearched a number of providers before settling on Sunshine. Found their response very good, answering questions and moreover didnt promise the earth in terms of whats solar return on investment would be. All in all a good experience.

5years ago installed a water heating system which is working well. Earlier this year decided to install a 12 panel system for power to the rest of the house and couldn't be happier. Good power savings, even in winter, installation prompt, and follow up service excellent. Good explanation of the workings of the system. Thank you all.

When we first decided to build a new house, John and Sunshine solar was recommended by a friend of ours. After talking with John about our needs, we decided to go with John and two years later. We finally moved in to our new home. The solar system works Great, Working with Sunshine Solar couldn't have been easier and we would highly recommend them to anybody.

The team at Sunshine Solar have been brilliant to deal with from start to finish. I can't recommend them more highly!
